Admission day:

- Clinical evaluation by the treating physician and his team
- Preoperative check-up (Full Blood Count (FBC), Blood group, Rhesus, crossmatch 4 units of erythrocytes + plasma, Urea, Creatinine, Glucose, Electorlytes, Liver enzymes (LFTs), PT, aPTT, INR, HIV, HbsAg, HCV, Urinalysis, ECG, Chest X-Ray, Cardiac Ultrasound)
- Cardiological evaluation
- Preoperative assessment by consultant anesthesiologist
- Patient preparation
Day of surgery:
- Proposed operation – Intraoperative transesophageal ultrasound
- Transfer to Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Postoperative assessment by treating surgeon and his team and ICU physicians
1st postoperative day:
- Treatment in ICU
- Postoperative assessment by treating surgeon and his team and ICU physicians
2nd postoperative day:
- Transfer to the Ward
- Telemetry
- Postoperative assessment by treating surgeon and anesthesiologist
- Mobilization
- Physical Therapy – respiratory therapy.
- Blood Potassium check (afternoon)
3rd postoperative day:
- Postoperative assessment by treating surgeon and his team
- FBC, Blood Potassium (Χ2), Sodium, Urea, Creatinine, LFTs, Glucose Chest X-Ray, ECG – INR (in case of anticoagulation therapy)
- ECG
4th postoperative day:
- Postoperative assessment by treating surgeon and his team
- Blood Potassium check (x2) and INR (in case of anticoagulation therapy)
5th postoperative day:
- Postoperative assessment by treating surgeon and his team
- Blood Potassium check (x2) and INR (in case of anticoagulation therapy)
6th postoperative day:
- Postoperative assessment by treating surgeon and his team
- FBC, Blood Potassium (Χ2), Sodium, Urea, Creatinine, LFTs, Glucose Chest X-Ray, ECG – INR (in case of anticoagulation therapy)
- Cardiac ultrasound
- ECG
7th postoperative day:
- Postoperative assessment by treating surgeon and his team
- Blood Potassium check (morning)
- Detailed postoperative instructions in the patients native language (wound care, dietary instructions, physical activities, rehabilitation, things to avoid, medication – if needed)
- Discharge from hospital
1st follow-up appointment:
In 1 week - clinical evaluation by treating physician and his team
Full Blood Count, Urea, Creatinine, Electorlytes, Liver enzymes, PT, aPTT, INR, ECG, Chest X-Ray, ECG
2nd follow-up appointment:
In 2 more weeks

Rehabilitation:
The patient can return to work in 3 months after the operation
ATTENTION:
The patient should avoid lifting weights, driving as well as any activity that might endanger the proper healing of the sternal wound for a period of 6 weeks
